Tools
Quick marine calculators. For guidance only: always follow your company procedures, flag state and the authorities first.
First steps after a grounding, collision or flooding
- People first. Muster and account for everyone on board. Treat injuries.
- Raise the alarm. Send a distress or urgency message as the situation requires, and inform the Coast Guard's Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC).
- Make safe. Stop engines if needed, close watertight doors, and prevent fire and pollution.
- Assess. Sound all tanks and spaces, check the hull for damage, and record the draughts, tide and weather.
- Do not rush to refloat. Coming off without checking damage, stability and strength can make things worse.
- Notify. Inform owners or managers, the P&I club, hull and machinery underwriters, and the flag and port authorities.
- Record everything. Keep log entries, times, positions, photos and the VDR data.
- Call for salvage support early. OTE 24/7: +91 99202 22232
Approximate sea distance along a coastal route, rounded. Not for navigation.
Simple arithmetic: time = distance ÷ speed; fuel = daily consumption × days at sea. Add margins for weather, current and port time. Use your vessel's own consumption figures.
Exact definitions: 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m; 1 knot = 1 nm per hour; 1 fathom = 6 ft = 1.8288 m; 1 tonne-force = 9.80665 kN; 1 long ton = 1,016.047 kg; 1 short ton = 907.185 kg; 1 US barrel = 158.987 litres.
